Back Pain and Car Accidents

If you suffer from back pain after an auto collision, don't worry. TJ Delorie sees this type of condition frequently in our Otown office. Let's look at the root cause of back pain after an auto collision and see how chiropractic care can help.

During a rear-end motor vehicle accident, your car and car seat are quickly accelerated forward against your body. Since car seats don't perfectly align with the curve of your spinal column, the seat can put inconsistent pressure on your lower back. This can cause some of your spinal vertebrae to move in one direction while an adjacent vertebrae might move in another direction. This differential movement can sprain or strain the tissues that hold your spine together. This kind of injury can cause chronic back pain if not treated promptly. Thankfully, chiropractic is one of the most effective ways to treat back pain.

If you've been hurt in a car crash and you're suffering from back pain, TJ Delorie is here to help. First, we'll do a careful evaluation to figure out the root cause of your pain, and then decide how to restore your body's natural functioning. Ready to make an appointment? Headache and Car Accidents

Headache is a common symptom after an auto injury, and it's something that TJ Delorie sees frequently in our Otown office. Why is headache such a common condition after a car crash? How can chiropractic care help you recover?

There are many different types of headache. Headache that's triggered by an auto injury, though, typically begins as tension or strain in the muscle tissue of the neck. In a crash, the neck muscles can be damaged, which results in swelling and discomfort. These kinds of headache can be felt in different places, including the back of the head or even the forehead.

Another common cause of headache after a crash that we see in our Otown office is cervicogenic headache, or headaches that originate in injured ligaments of the neck. Ligament injury is quite common after a crash, and it's important to get treatment for this type of problem to avoid the creation of scar tissue.

Chiropractic is an excellent way to treat headaches, including those brought about by auto injuries. TJ Delorie can help reduce the irritation and tension in your neck, which will help relieve the headache pain.

Let us help you recover from headache. TJ Delorie has helped many patients with the same condition, and we can probably help you, too. First, we'll do a careful examination to figure out the root cause of your problem, and then decide how to restore your body's natural functioning. Why You Should Avoid Drugs for Back Pain

Otown chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is centered on the principle of allowing your body to naturally heal through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that promote wellness. For TJ Delorie, this involves working to restore your body's healthy performance to prevent the need for medications or surgical treatments. We notice that many of our Otown patients are pleased to find a natural answer for their health issues.

One advantage of chiropractic care is that it helps people reduce or eliminate the use of drugs. Prescriptions are oftentimes issued to people who have back soreness. This is such a significant concern that the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) issued a news release stating that opioid (painkiller) risks outweigh the advantages when prescribed for back pain.

Some of the most common narcotics, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, include hydrocodone (Vicodin), oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet), morphine, and codeine. Figures provided by the AAN cite the fact that approximately half of the patients taking these drugs for a period of three months are still taking them five years later. This can further complicate the issue of back pain and recovery, particularly if an narcotic addiction arises.

Contrast that to chiropractic care which involves natural healing and the benefits are clear. While a pill might be helpful at temporarily reducing the symptoms of a health problem, it's not a long-term solution to the problem. Drugs don't fix your injured spine; it will only cover up the pain.

TJ Delorie will first examine you to get to the source of your back pain and then work with you to correct the spinal interference -- without the need for risky medications.

If you're ready for relief of your pain, naturally, give our Otown office a call at 724-123-1234 to make an appointment with TJ Delorie.

Avoid Sciatica Surgery With Chiropractic

TJ Delorie works with many sciatica patients here in our Otown office, and many of these individuals were concerned that they might require surgery to alleviate their pain. The most recent research indicates that many people don't require surgery for this common issue, and that chiropractic is more effective at solving sciatic nerve pain.

A common surgery for sciatica is microdiscectomy, and in a 2010 study, researchers looked at 80 women and men with sciatica who were referred for this operation.

Forty patients were then randomly sorted into one of two groups. The first group received surgical microdiscectomy and the second group received chiropractic care.

Both groups improved; however, no apparent difference in results was reported one year post-treatment between the surgery group and the chiropractic group. Additionally, roughly 60 percent of the participating patients who could not find relief from any other treatment approach "benefited from spinal manipulation to the same degree as if they underwent surgical intervention."

Put another way, chiropractic delivered the same positive advantages as surgery without having to undergo the increased amounts of surgery-based pain or suffer through extended recovery times often affiliated with that particular treatment option. Additionally, you also don't run the risks associated with surgical microdiscectomy, which includes nerve root damage, bowel or bladder incontinence, bleeding, or infection.

Surgery ought to be the last resort for sciatica pain. If you live in Otown and you're experiencing back pain or sciatica, give TJ Delorie a call today at 724-123-1234. We'll help pinpoint the source of your pain and work hard to get you relief.

Chiropractic Effective for Herniated Disc Pain

Otown chiropractic disc herniation treatmentRegrettably, many of our Otown patients are familiar with the pain caused by a herniated disc all too well. Fortunately, TJ Delorie has helped many people with disc pain, and a number of research studies have verified that chiropractic care can help people recover from this kind of problem.

Research on Chiropractic and Disc Herniations

In one report, doctors from Switzerland selected 148 patients who were suffering with pain in their lower back and legs due to a herniated disc (which was confirmed through magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI). Each individual then received chiropractic adjustments that focused on the location of his or her disc herniation.

Results were collected after the initial treatment session at set intervals--namely, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year--to establish what type of short-term and long-term effects, if any, chiropractic care offers when it comes to resolving this particular condition. Among the data collected was the individual's self-reported changes in both back and leg pain.

Researchers found that, as a whole, the study participants reported "significant improvement" for both types of pain every time the results were collected. In fact, over 90% of the study participants claimed that their pain "improved" within the first three months, with 88% still citing improvement one year after their first treatment session.

Even those people who were defined as "chronic" still claimed an improvement in pain at a rate of 89 percent one year beyond when treatment first began. This is the same positive result that was found in the following case study.

Case Study Shows that Chiropractic Benefits Chronic Disc Herniation Symptoms

In this study, a 26-year-old male had presented with disc herniation symptoms such as pain in the lower back, left leg, and left groin area, along with left foot drop and muscle weakness. He had suffered with these symptoms for more than two years after sustaining a sports injury, and his herniated disc was confirmed via MRI.

After receiving chiropractic, "The patient responded favorably and his multi-symptom complex resolved within 90 days of treatment." In addition, the patient was still experiencing relief one year after the chiropractic intervention.

Studies like these show how beneficial chiropractic can be when it comes to alleviating herniated disc pain and relieving the symptoms they produce. So, if you are suffering from back ache caused by a herniated disc and want to find some relief, chiropractic might be an effective solution.

Don't suffer from chronic herniated disc pain. Give our Otown office a call today at 724-123-1234 for a consultation or appointment.

Chiropractic and Medical Care: An Effective Combination

Otown back pain treatmentWe see quite a few patients with back pain in our Otown practice, and TJ Delorie has been able to provide a lot of them find relief with chiropractic. However, recovering from back pain doesn't necessarily mean having to make a choice between chiropractic care and medical treatment, as many individuals utilize both types of care with great outcomes.

Study Confirms Chiropractic and Medical Treatment Work Well with Each Other

In a report published by the academic journal Spine investigators1 looked at a group of active-duty military personnel between the ages of 18 and 35 who were suffering from both acute soreness and restricted function due to back symptoms. Some of the patients engaged in treatment via standard medical therapy, while the rest were given chiropractic care along with standard medical care, as researchers wanted to determine which patients fared better.

Researchers discovered that the group that received standard medical care combined with chiropractic care scored "significantly better" than the patients who received medical care alone; 73% reported positive benefits in comparison to just 17% of the medical treatment only group who reported the same amount of improvement. This was true regarding both pain and level of function at two and four weeks.

Thus, combining these two forms of care can greatly benefit you--the patient--offering benefits when compared to medical care alone. However, while chiropractic and medicine can work together, chiropractic offers some distinct strengths over medical treatment.

Where Chiropractic Pulls Ahead

Although it may seem as if each method plays a 50-50 role, there is one major benefit that chiropractic has over medical care and that is in patient satisfaction. In fact, a study from UCLA2 that was printed in the American Journal of Public Health found that, on average, chiropractic patients are generally more satisfied with their recovery than those undergoing medical treatment.

According to the experts, the main aspects that patients liked over medical care were "self-care advice and explanation of treatment." This isn't surprising, as chiropractors frequently spend much more time advising their patients as to how they can better their health on their own, as well as discussing more carefully what to expect from chiropractic care.

Chiropractic Is a Natural Approach to Wellness

Without a doubt, the techniques associated with chiropractic are quite different than those offered with medical care, but a great deal of the distinction is the fact that chiropractic is a holistic approach to health and wellness. Rather than focusing on only relieving the symptoms, chiropractic care involves tracking down the primary cause of your pain, which often means greater improvement as you are addressing the problem at its source.

Additionally, while medication is sometimes helpful for managing certain conditions, many health issues respond well to a natural approach like chiropractic care. This means fewer negative responses to prescriptions and more permanent recovery.

Why You Should Avoid Drugs for Back Pain

Otown chiropractic back pain treatmentChiropractic is based on the concept of helping your body to naturally heal through spinal adjustments and lifestyle changes that promote overall health. For TJ Delorie, this involves working to restore your body's healthy functioning to avoid the need for drugs or surgery. We find that many of our Otown patients are happy to find a natural answer for their health conditions.

One advantage of chiropractic is that it helps people decrease or eliminate the use of drug treatments. Prescription medications are oftentimes issued to patients who have back pain. Data offered by the AAN mention the fact that roughly half of the people taking these drugs for a period of three months are still taking them five years later. This can further complicate the problem of back pain and healing, especially if an narcotic addiction arises.

Contrast that to chiropractic which incorporates natural healing and the advantages are clear. While a pill might be helpful at briefly reducing the discomfort of a health condition, it's not a solution to the problem. Drugs don't fix your injured back; it will only mask the pain.

Treating Neck Pain with Chiropractic

Otown chiropractic neck pain treatmentAccording to The American Academy of Pain Medicine, more Americans suffer with chronic pain than diabetes, coronary heart disease, stroke, and cancer combined. On top of that, neck pain is the third most documented type of pain, beat out only by back pain and headache.

Not surprisingly, a lot of people come to our Otown office looking for neck pain treatment, and TJ Delorie has helped many of them find relief. This is a smart choice, as some research indicates that over 90% of neck pain patients improve with chiropractic care.

Studies Confirm Chiropractic Works

A report published in The Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy included 64 individuals who were suffering with neck problems. Roughly half were placed in an experimental group and the other half were assigned to a comparison group. Both received chiropractic adjustments of the neck as well as a home exercise plan, while the experimental group also received adjustments of the thoracic spine.

Data was collected before treatment began and one week after the adjustments. Researchers found that 94 percent of the experimental group reported "significantly greater improvements" in regard to pain and disability in their neck symptoms. Just 35% of the individuals who received neck adjustments showed the same level of improvement, showing that looking at the entire spine is a critical part of restoring the body's normal function.

One more study posted in Physical Therapy involved 60 adults who reported dealing with neck pain. Each individual was randomly allocated to one of two groups--thoracic spine thrust manipulation or non-thrust manipulation--with follow-up exams occurring two and four days after the adjustments.

Researchers discovered that the study participants who received the thrust manipulations (the same adjustments that offered such positive results in the first report) "experienced greater reductions in disability" than the group that received the non-thrust adjustments. Their pain was lower as well, which shows that this type of technique offers many benefits.

Chiropractic Even Offers Benefits After Failed Neck Surgery

Another study also found the same sort of positive results after thoracic adjustments in a patient who had a failed neck surgical treatment. This specific case involved a 46-year-old patient who had recently had neck surgery but still reported neck pain, headaches, pain in her elbow, and muscle fatigue.

The woman reported reduced pain in her neck and reduced headache intensity, immediately after the first chiropractic treatment session. After six weeks of care, which involved chiropractic, exercise, and patient education, the patient still rated her pain at a zero on a scale of 1 to 10. Her neck disability reduced as well, with a rating score that represented that it was a "great deal better."

It is studies like these that substantiate the advantages of chiropractic adjustments, even if you've already attempted neck surgery that didn't provide relief. So, if you are suffering with neck problems and would like to find a solution that has a high success rate, try chiropractic. It may just be the relief you're looking for.
