Chiropractic Aids Sprained Ankle Recovery

Olympia natural ankle sprain treatmentWe see a number of patients in our Olympia office with ankle sprains but TJ Delorie has had a lot of success helping them heal more quickly. Why are ankle sprains so common and how can chiropractic care help?

According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), approximately 25,000 people in the US sprain their ankles daily. As a matter of fact, these injuries make up nearly half of all sports injuries, causing people to spend time away from the activities they enjoy most.

Like any injury, there are many causes of ankle sprains. The most frequent is inversion, or when the ankle rolls inward. This injury can take place due to one forceful movement, or it can develop over a period of time, and exercises that increase the risk for this type of ankle sprain include running and jumping. You're also at risk if you have pre-existing ankle injuries, poor posture or balance, weak muscles, and reduced range of motion.

How Can Chiropractic Treatments and TJ Delorie Help?

A paper published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics set out to identify chiropractic's role when it comes to ankle sprain recovery. The authors enrolled 33 people between the ages of 18 and 45 who had a history of ankle inversion sprains, who were reporting tenderness and/or pain, and had not re-injured the area in the previous six weeks.

Eighteen of the subjects were assigned to receive rehabilitation and the other 15 subjects received chiropractic in addition to rehabilitation. Each individual had five full weeks of treatments, with the rehab group receiving treatment seven days a week and the rehabilitation plus chiropractic group receiving care six out of the seven days.

Research Supports Chiropractic Helps With Ankle Sprains

The study found that the people who had both rehab and chiropractic fared the best at the 4-week mark when it came to pain and joint restriction. Furthermore, no negative effects were reported, showing that this treatment option is safe.

Olympia TMJ Pain and Auto Injury

Olympia TMJ Treatment by TJ DelorieJaw pain is a fairly typical problem reported by many people after a car accident, and it can be tough for some physicians to diagnose the source of the problem. Complicating the matter, oftentimes you won't develop TMJ pain until many weeks or months after the original injury.

TJ Delorie has treated many individuals with jaw pain after an injury, and the medical research explains what triggers these types of symptoms. During a crash, the tissues in your neck are often stretched or torn, causing ligament, muscle, or nerve injury. This can clearly cause pain in the neck and back, but since your central nervous system is one functioning unit, inflammation of the nerves can cause problems in other parts of your body.

For instance, with radicular pain, irritation of a nerve can cause tingling or numbness in the arm and hand. Similarly, it can affect parts of your body above the injured tissues, like your head and jaw. Headaches after a wreck are very common because of neck injury, and the TMJ works the same way. TJ Delorie sees this very often in our Olympia office.

Research Proves Chiropractic Lessens TMJ Pain After an Auto Accident

Studies have shown that the source of many jaw or TMJ problems begins in the neck and that treatment of the underlying neck injury can fix the secondary headaches or jaw symptoms. The key to dealing with these symptoms is simple: TJ Delorie will work to restore your spinal column back to health, alleviating the inflammatory reaction, treating the injured areas, and removing the irritation to the nerves in your spine.

TJ Delorie finds that jaw and headache issues often resolve once we restore your spine to its healthy state.

Olympia Chiropractic Auto Accident Treatment

Olympia auto injury recovery and treatment by TJ DelorieEvery year, there are millions of car crashes in the world, and a substantial number of men and women get injured in a car wreck. While most accidents are "minor," chronic neck and back pain are still common health problems. The good news is that chiropractic care is a very good way to correct these kinds of injuries.

We've treated many auto accident patients in our Olympia office, and TJ Delorie has been helping people with these types of injuries since 2002. During a car wreck, your body is exposed to violent forces that it simply wasn't built to handle. These forces put strain and stress on your neck, shoulder, and back, and can result in damage to the ligaments that hold your spine together. A collision can result in a wide variety of pain symptoms.

A ligament tear in the neck can cause pain, swelling, and radicular symptoms in the arm and hand. Chiropractic care works well for these types of injuries, because chiropractic focuses on restoring the healthy function and flexibility of the injured areas.

Chiropractic Effective for Tension Headaches

Olympia Headache Treatment by TJ DelorieMany people suffer from headache pain, and tension headaches are a frequent problem in our busy world. Postural problems and stress are common causes of tension headache, and ones that TJ Delorie and the team here in our Olympia chiropractic office have a lot of experience in treating.

Research Supports Chiropractic Eases Tension Headaches

The scientific literature verifies our findings: A 2016 study from Spain treated a group of 76 patients with chronic tension headaches. The participants were divided into four treatment groups: 19 patients were treated with suboccipital inhibition (the therapist presses on the tight tissues at the top of the spine); 19 with chiropractic adjustments; 19 with both adjustments and suboccipital inhibition; and 19 received no treatment.

The authors found that the spinal adjustments were beneficial at relieving pain, and that the best results were found when adjustments were combined with the suboccipital inhibition.

When we get stressed, the nerves and tissues in the neck can be disrupted, resulting in pain. Chiropractic works by removing these stresses and restoring the normal nerve function to the area.

Olympia Back Pain Treatment

"

Most of us suffer from back pain at some point in our lives. Researchers estimate that nearly 1 out of 3 adults deal with some kind of regular spinal pain. TJ Delorie and our talented staff see many back pain cases in our Olympia office, and we've found that chiropractic care is a highly effective way to not only help you heal from back pain, it's also a great way to prevent future episodes.

Research Proves Chiropractic Helps With Chronic Back Pain

A recent article from the University of Utah confirms what our Olympia patients have reported: your Olympia chiropractor is the best first option for an event of back pain.

In this paper, 747 participants were treated for low back pain. Each patient was evaluated based on the first person they sought treatment with, whether it was a primary care physician, a chiropractor, a physiatrist (also known as a rehabilitation physician), or a physical therapist.

What the researchers discovered is that the men and women who first saw a chiropractor had fewer advanced imaging tests and fewer surgical procedures.

Other papers have found the same results. A 2012 study reported that chiropractic patients had the best functional recovery and pain relief for chronic back pain.

Chiropractic works by restoring the natural, pain-free function of your spine. TJ Delorie and our team help your body heal with gentle chiropractic adjustments that don't use drugs or risky surgical procedures.

Migraines Helped by Chiropractic

Olympia natural migraine treatment by TJ DelorieWith the Migraine Research Foundation reporting that migraine headaches affect 38 million adults and children in the United States (more than asthma and diabetes put together), it's no surprise that TJ Delorie treats a lot of headache patients in our Olympia office. Although some folks try to relieve migraine pain with medications, chiropractic care is a fantastic, all-natural choice that usually produces positive results.

For instance, one study published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics involved 127 patients ranging in age from 10 to 70-years-old who struggled with regular (at least monthly) headaches. Each subject engaged in up to 16 chiropractic sessions. The patients noted that their headache frequency, duration, and disability two months before the study began, during the duration of the sessions (which was two months), and two months post-treatment.

What the researchers discovered is that chiropractic adjustments reduced the frequency, duration, and disability of the migraine headaches when compared with the control patients who didn't receive chiropractic. In addition, this allowed them to take less medication for the pain, offering them an all-natural solution for a chronic condition.

Another report found that a combination of chiropractic and neck massage reduced migraine headaches almost 68%.

It also offers many health benefits as well. Some are physical and others are psychological, and here are some of the proven benefits:

  • Pain reduction (back, neck, shoulder, legs, arm, and headache pain)
  • Improved range of motion and flexibility
  • Better circulation
  • Improved immune system function
  • Enhanced sports performance
  • Decreased depression and anxiety
  • Higher levels of energy
  • Lower levels of fatigue
  • Reduced insomnia

Benefits like these have been discovered to be especially helpful for individuals who suffer with chronic conditions such as arthritis and asthma. Have Knee Pain? Chiropractic May Help

Olympia natural knee knee pain treatmentKnee pain is a frequent issue for patients in our Olympia chiropractic office, and TJ Delorie has happily provided many of these people relief. This is largely because chiropractic care has been found to help with many types of knee pain.

For example, some people experience pain in and around the knee area due to degenerative arthritis. Research has demonstrated that this condition responds very well to chiropractic--and rather quickly, too. In fact, one paper published in The Journal of the Canadian Chiropractic Association found that men and women with osteoarthritis in their knees felt considerable pain relief and enhanced function after just two weeks of chiropractic care.

If your knee pain is caused by a medial meniscus sprain, chiropractic could likely help with that as well. One case found that integrating chiropractic with soft tissue treatment, rest, ice, and compression on the affected knee helped lower the intensity of the pain.

Of course, sometimes a knee replacement surgery is necessary in order to correct the issue, and if that's the case, chiropractic can also help improve the outcome. How?

Medical research has shown that people with low back pain frequently have less positive outcomes after knee surgery. Therefore, dealing with your back pain through chiropractic prior to having a total knee arthroplasty can assist with your post-surgery healing.

No matter what your knee issue, TJ Delorie can likely help. Call our Olympia practice today and find out what we can do for you!

Olympia Chiropractic Care for Headache

There are many different kinds of headache, but one of the most common types is known as "cervicogenic headache," or those that originate in your neck.

TJ Delorie sees a lot of patients in our Olympia office who are struggling with recurring headaches. Thankfully, chiropractic adjustments can often help, potentially reducing these types of headaches by 50 percent, and research confirms it.

A study was conducted involving 80 participants who reported experiencing at least five cervicogenic headaches during the prior three months. The goal was to see how effective chiropractic was for this type of head pain, as well as to ascertain the number of treatment sessions required to achieve a positive effect.

The patients were divided into four separate groups, so that each group was similar in age, gender, number of cervicogenic headaches, and their intensity. Of the four groups, two engaged in chiropractic treatments and two received light massage. Furthermore, one group assigned to each treatment received eight sessions and the other group received twice that amount.

Each patient was assessed based on head pain, neck pain, and disability prior to the study and 12 and 24 weeks after treatment was complete. The researchers found that those who received chiropractic as opposed to massage reported fewer headaches at the conclusion of the study. Furthermore, improvements were maintained when checked six months after treatment ended.

Additionally, individuals who were taking medications for their headaches were able to lower their intake after completing the study. Those who received chiropractic had lower medication usage 24 weeks post-study.
